MYCELIUM based materials
RIZOTECH is developing a new regional value chain in which mycelium derived from plant-based side streams is processed into new sustainable materials. The project combines fermentation, material development, and paper technology to produce these materials at pilot scale and further scale up production. In collaboration with businesses, educational institutions, and value chain partners, the materials’ performance, applications, and market potential are being validated. In this way, RIZOTECH is laying the foundation for a circular industry that creates new economic opportunities, fosters knowledge development, and generates sustainable employment in West Brabant.
Collaboration and roles
The Protein Express develops and optimizes the fermentation processes used to produce mycelium.
Millvision develops and scales up the production chain for processing mycelium at an industrial scale.
Curio establishes the BioTec & Materialen Fieldlab and develops educational programmes through which students contribute to development, research, and innovation.
B4Plastics develops, among other things, bio-based crosslinkers and sustainable finishing technologies to improve material properties.
Development of mycelium textile processing
WP3 focuses on developing a scalable production process that converts mycelium derived from regional residual streams into rolls of bio-based sheet material. Through paper technology, oil impregnation, finishing, and quality control, both rigid and flexible materials are produced for interior and textile applications. The results provide a bridge to industrial production and value chain development.
Material development and the BioTec Fieldlab for education
WP4 focuses on researching new raw materials, crosslinkers, adhesives, and sustainable finishing techniques to further improve the material’s performance and circularity. At the same time, a BioTec & Materials Fieldlab is being developed in collaboration with Curio, where students, researchers, and businesses work together on practical innovations. This initiative supports the development of both new technologies and the knowledge and talent needed in the bio-based sector.
Market validation, value chain development, and scale-up preparation
WP5 uses demonstration materials and prototypes to validate applications, customers, and value chain partners. Market feedback is used to refine promising product-market combinations, while business cases, life cycle assessments (LCAs), and scale-up scenarios are developed. This work package paves the way for commercial production and the establishment of a new regional value chain for mycelium-based materials.
